For many years IAEM has highlighted the serious patient safety risks of patients being detained on trolleys in Emergency Departments after the decision that these patients require hospital admission has been made. In spite of on-going representations, there has been no significant improvement in the number of inpatient boarders (as these patients are referred to).
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation have been compiling a Trolley Watch since 2004. It counts the number of inpatient boarders in EDs around the country and access to this page on the INMO’s website is provided with INMO’s permission.
