Recognition of Emergency Medicine Training Posts from 1st July 2010

There was an unfortunate degree of confusion about the status of SHO and Registrar posts in Emergency Medicine in the country's EDs in the lead up to the 1st July 2010 changeover. The situation is complex and reflects legislative, oversight, managerial and relationship changes within the relevant bodies charged with oversight of training. While similar difficulties are being encountered in other specialties for the same reasons, EM has been harder hit than many other medical specialties. ACEMT intends to set up a national Basic Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine (BSTEM) Programme which will be rolled out in July 2011.

The Statement of Intent agreed with HSE METR (Medical Education, Training & Research), the Explanatory letter sent to all Consultants in Emergency Medicine and the document on Basic Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine referred to in the correspondence are all available to view.
