HistoryBackground
This section of the website provides a history of the development, in Ireland, of the medical field of expertise initially known as Casualty. This field of medical practice later developed into the specialty of Accident & Emergency (A&E) Medicine and ultimately Emergency Medicine.
The development of Casualty, Accident & Emergency Medicine and later Emergency Medicine in Ireland closely parallels the development of the specialty in our nearest neighbour, the United Kingdom and the milestones in both jurisdictions are intertwined. The specialty also developed over broadly the same period in the United States, Canada and Australasia although arguably achieved a greater degree of progress and recognition within the medical community in the latter more quickly. Reference is made to key developments in these countries in the Milestones section.
This section documents the history of the Irish Accident & Emergency Association (IAEA) which later became the Irish Association for Emergency Medicine (IAEM). The Association was founded to represent the interests of doctors working in Accident & Emergency Departments, later Emergency Departments and the medical specialty.
The History section will be progressively added to and further archival material uploaded during 2010.
