Welcome to the Irish Association for Emergency Medicine

 

About the Irish Association for Emergency Medicine

IAEM is a limited company (Registration Number 499633) and a Charity (CHY 17751) recognised by the Revenue Commissioners under the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997 which aims to: 

  • Educate clinicians in all aspects of Emergency Medicine through organisation of an Annual Scientific Meeting, other academic fora and through support of the Basic Specialist (BSTEM) and Higher Specialist Training (HSTEM) programmes in Emergency Medicine.
  • Promote the highest standards of emergency care for patients of all ages in the diagnosis and management of acute and urgent aspects of undifferentiated illness, injury and behavioural disorders.
  • Advocate for and seek the best quality and quantum of suitably trained staff and other resources so as to meet and maintain the highest standards of emergency care.
  • Support, advance and monitor sustainable training and research in emergency care for all patients.
  • Provide expert guidance and advice on matters relating to optimum emergency care, both to the public and relevant national health-related bodies.
  • Support and advise groups interested in advancing emergency care, both at home and abroad.

While the Association's remit is Ireland, IAEM plays an international role through membership of the European Society for Emergency Medicine and the International Federation for Emergency Medicine. Fuller details are provided in the IAEM Constitution.  The Company's Memorandum and Articles of Association are also available for inspection.

Who may join?

Membership is open to doctors interested in or working in the specialty of Emergency Medicine. Medical Student membership of the Association has been possible since October 2011 and as a gesture to those Medical Students interested in Emergency Medicine, the normal Annual Subscription will be waived for the 2013 subscription year.

The Association is always pleased to receive applications from would-be members and particularly welcomes applications from doctors early in their Emergency Medicine careers.

2013 Annual Scientific Meeting

The 2013 Annual Scientific Meeting will take place in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal from Thursday 17th to Saturday 19th October 2013. As details come to hand, they will be posted on the IAEM Scientific Meeting 2013 page.

Emergency Medicine Programme

The landmark national Emergency Medicine Programme Report was published and launched by the Minister for Health, Dr. James Reilly TD, at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland on 19th June 2012. Please see the EMP page for further details.  

ICEM 2012

 

The 14th International Conference on Emergency Medicine took place at the Convention Centre, Dublin from 27th to 30th June 2012. The Conference set new records for an ICEM meeting with 2,200 delegates attending and over 1,100 abstract submissions received.

The Conference was officially opened by the President of Ireland, Mr. Michael D Higgins. The President's Address was warmly received by the delegates from over 60 countries
